When you decide to purchase a telescope, you have two main choices. You can purchase a refractor or a reflector. When shopping for a telescope, stay away from scopes that claim HIGH power, it's not about power it's all about light gathering. The larger your aperture the more light you can gather.
A reflecting telescope uses mirrors to gather light and reflect it into an eyepiece.
A refracting telescope uses lenses to gather light.
You can normally get a much larger telescope with much more light gathering ability at a lower cost if you purchase reflecting telescope.
