Network Routers, Wireless Networking

One item you'll find in many home these days is a network router. I've come across so many wireless router that are set up unsecured allowing anyone within range to access their network. Below are some tips for setting up a wireless network.

First of all, if you are broadcasting your SSID, don't use your last name or anything that indicates who the network belongs to. Make it vague, I've gone into clients homes and found up to 5 available networks all labeled so we knew who the networks belonged to and whether we could access then.

Second, use Wireless Security such as WPA Personal and never use your name, your kids name or a pets name as the key, your neighbor will guess it easily. Always use an alpha numeric password with upper and lower case letters. If you think no one is going to access your network, think again. I have see neighborhood kids with laptop computers sitting near someone's house whose network is open or not secured well.

Third, be sure to change the default log in name and password for the router so that someone else can't lock you out of your own network.

Finally, if you have a business and share an open network, make sure you have a policy clearly posted that prohibits the use of you network for illegal activities. Illegal activities such as download pirated music and movies of navigating explicit web site and content.
