Pellet Stove Tips

With the rising cost of heating oil and other recourses, many people have installed Wood Pellet Stoves in their home. After using one for more than six years I've learned a few things listed below.

  • Shop around for pellets and have then delivered in June for the entire year, you'll spend a lot less on them.
  • Always buy premium pellets with low ash content, you'll get a better BTU rating from your stove.
  • Always buy the same brand and type of pellets. If you change up you may need to make adjustment to you stove with each change to get the same amount of heat.
  • Do not skip this step! Clean the stove well once per week. Clean the heat exchanger pipes clean the bricks, clean the photo eye and at least every two weeks, empty the ash pan.
  • After each ton of pellets burned, clean the exhaust pipe, clean behind the bricks if possible, clean around the motors and remove the fine(unburned pellet dust) from the auger to promote good pellet flow while burning.
  • Have your stove cleaned one per year in the summer months by a professional. Also having a good backup heat source is good just in case the stove needs a repair.
Follow these steps and you'll have a good running stove for a lot of years. You should expect to replace some parts as maintenance. The igniter and the auger motor will most likely need to be replaced after a few years of use. Keep this in mind and be sure that you have a dealer near by that stocks and can replace any part of your stove.
